Siemens VDO Supplies Tolling Systems for Switzerland

Villingen-Schwenningen, July 05, 2006

Siemens VDO Automotive will supply 70,000 toll collection devices for use in Switzerland. The order from the Swiss Customs Administration was granted to Siemens Schweiz AG and, along with the onboard units, it also includes the acquisition point software, the security infrastructure and the logistics. The devices currently deployed for collecting the Swiss Distance-related Heavy Vehicles Fee (LSVA for short) will be completely replaced by the new system and will come into operation in the beginning of 2009.

The Swiss toll system, operated by the Swiss Federal Customs Administration, was designed for a service life of seven years for the Onboard Units (OBU), starting from 2000. For that reason, an invitation to bid on the project was issued once again in the spring of 2005. The first generation of devices will be completely replaced by the new OBUs.

By expanding the corresponding modules and implementing software adaptations, the ”CH-OBU-2” is technically designed to be able to collect toll data in neighboring countries as well. With the new Bluetooth interface, for example, the user can transmit the data to his or her office PC via a cell phone.

Siemens Schweiz AG is working on the bid together with Siemens VDO Automotive, the onboard unit manufacturer. The software required for the acquisition points and the LSVA security infrastructure were developed by Siemens Schweiz AG. Siemens partner Mobatime Swiss AG is responsible for the distribution of the devices, training courses, installation and maintenance. Siemens VDO Automotive is one of the suppliers of the German toll collection onboard units used by Toll Collect.
